Dan Ivins knows no strangers, only friends he hasn’t met. When he’s not stepping on ‘church land mines,’ he’s been having fun as a senior pastor for over four decades in the four corners of the country, including Birmingham, AL, Phoenix. AZ, Portland, OR, with most of his time in the Washington D.C. area. Ivins is the 36th pastor of The First Baptist Church in America to serve after the first one, Roger Williams. He and his good wife Libby are transplanted Tennesseans. They enjoy living in Providence and are parents of 2 grown daughters, living in the southland, who gave them 4 wonderful grands. Sometimes known as “The Prime Minister of Mirth,” Br’er Dan is the most improbable of creatures — a life-long Baptist in the historical tradition; Southern born, bred and buttered, but now stationed up in Yankee land. He gets a “bee in his bonnet” every now and then and lets it buzz around every Sunday morning. Granted his accent throws people off, but he figures his is no worse than Roger’s. It comes out most when the staff gathers around the kitchen table to solve all the world’s problems every morning. He specializes as a seer of subtleties, and among his favorite activities are sports, traveling, and riding his motorbike. Two things he enjoys doing are: making people think and helping them to laugh. This he tries to do when preaching, which can be sampled on this site under “worship and music.” Ya’ll feel free to check out the subtleties therein.

Hello, my name is Henry Earl Sumpter Jr. from Greensboro, North Carolina. I found your church website randomly via GOOGLE. This is in no way spam, a hoax, or an attempt to swindle money. This is only a means for me to ask for just a simple prayer request and nothing more. I would greatly appreciate it if you could pray for a financial blessing to assist me with the threat of the Internal Revenue Service garnishing my wages, the foreclosure of my home, creditors, and keeping my vehicle. I know I am nothing special and facing what millions of Americans are going through during these trying times. I thank you for taking the time of reading my prayer request.
Hi Dan,
I would like to speak with you about AWAB holding our 20th anniversary celebration at FBCA. October 11-14, 2013. I am contacting Stan as well. Please give me a call at 240-242-9220 or email me at [email protected].
Blessings!
BTW – I am trying to get down to FBCA on a Sunday to worship with you all. Hope to make it this year!
Dear Pastor Dan:
I am writing in the hopes that you are in need of a beautiful three-year old Boston Baby 5’1” grand piano – ebony satin finish with bench.
The piano is in great condition, and I can come up with a very fair price. Finally, if you are not in need of the piano, please let me know if any other music organization or individual you know may want a piano. I live in South Kingstown – so am not too far away.
If you send me an appropriate email address – I can send you photos of the piano.
I look forward to hearing from you. Enjoy the remainder of the summer.
Very best regards,

Thanks for your graciousness. I forwarded it to our Minister of Music, Steve Martorella.
Sorry to be so delinquent in this, I’ve been out of pocket for several months. Love to see you anytime. Please identify yourself when you come.
My husband, son and daughter-in-law were privileged to visit your Worship service last Sun., Aug. 5. The service was a blessing from the music, prayers, preaching and observance of the Lord’s Supper. We hope to visit with you again when we return to see our son. He’s beginning medical school at Brown so he will be around for a while.
Justin provided us with an interesting and informative church tour; I’m sorry that I left without seeing the notecards that you have for sale. We’ll get them on the next trip.
I’ll tell everyone at First Baptist, Mobile, AL, and at Church of the Covenant that they need to travel to RI for a visit in the near future!
Sincerely, Margaret Mangham
Good to have ya’ll back this Sunday! Br’er Dan
